1217% Views Growth In The Second Month on Medium
The stats are making me restless (my accountability journal — June 2021).
Before I talk about stats, I have a confession.
The stats are making me anxious. I keep checking my views every hour. Of course, expecting the algorithm to make at least one of my articles go viral. I really need to stop doing that.
I was going to write a disappointing article before I stumbled upon this Tim Denning’s article. To cut things short, the article says to be thankful for your 100 views.
Okay, I don’t have those many views on each of my articles. But, if I analyse my stats for June 2021. I believe I have done a decent job. I wrote 16 articles, i.e. one article every two days. I am super proud of this as I pulled it off with a full-time job (obviously work from home).
Let’s talk about the stats.
Last month I wrote 8 articles and accumulated 76 views. I will be ending this month with 923 views. That is good1217% views growth over one month. It is a bit unfair comparison as I wrote a lesser number of articles last month.
But even if I normalise my last month’s views (152 views for 16 articles), that would still be more than 600% growth. Even that is a fine second month for me from the perspective of views growth.
My reads have gone up by 706% compared to last month.
*The view count should be taken as 76 as I took the screenshot after 12 am.
All that happened last month
As you can see most of my views have come during the 1st half of the month. My 1st article went semi-viral as per newbie standards. It received 300 views in a day. That gave me a dopamine hit.
I had mentioned in my last accountability journal about writing at least one fiction story. I did. It wrote a short erotic story.
As expected, from what I had learnt from other writers, Medium doesn’t promote such types of pieces. That’s totally fine with me. But, after writing that story I have been in curation jail. Even after writing well-researched articles on a variety of subjects, Medium does not seem to be keen on distributing them.
Before I wrote the short erotic fiction, 4 out of 6 articles were chosen for distribution. So, I believe writing such an article on Medium was a big blunder.
As many writers say on this platform, the article which you believe is the best may perform the worst. God bless the unpredictability of the algorithm.
Hypothetical earnings
As I am not eligible for the partner program, I don’t earn a single penny for writing on Medium. It is actually a blessing in disguise because at least money is not the prime motivation (views are). It is purely the love for writing.
With the assumption of $12 per thousand views, I would have earned approximately $9.50. Well, that doesn’t pinch me. But, I do hope that I become eligible for the program before my views grow exponentially. It will be great to pocket a few dollars for my work.
My work
I wrote a few articles that I am super proud of, so I am going to shamelessly paste the link in this one.
The article mentioned below is one of the properly researched ones I wrote last month. Unfortunately, it did not get as many views as I was expecting. I was expecting this one to get curated.
The best thing that happened to me last month was writing a feature article for a UK based movie pub — Frame-rated. Thank you, Dan Owen, for presenting this opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of writing this article. It took me three days for the research and it involved watching one of my favourite movies by Stanley Kubrick.
I finished June 2021 by writing a gist about my travelogue— My Iranian Diary that I released this month on Amazon. That is my first ever e-book released on Amazon.
My strategy for July 2021
The most crucial strategy for July 2021 is to continue writing articles on this phenomenal platform. No matter how many views I get.
I am going to continue writing at least one erotic fiction a month. But I may not post it on Medium. Instead, I will post on Vocal Media as I feel it is the right platform for writing fiction pieces.
I would also continue to write feature articles about movies that have changed my perspective. FYI, I am a big movie buff.
I intend to write more finance articles as that is my area of expertise. I hope to add value to my readers and help them make informed financial decisions. Last but not the least, I shall continue to share my learnings by writing insightful articles.
Signing off!
With my 25th article.
